I don’t want to be seen as biting the hand that feeds me.  Well, to be honest, despite the numbers floated around the news for shows like Jon & Kate Plus 8 and Jersey Shore, the majority of reality TV pays about the same as a greeter position at the local Wal Mart.  To say our show “feeds us” would be a misrepresentation of the facts.

But here’s one fact, there are officially too many cake shows on television!!! I mean it, waaaay too many.  Why, even this week I had a random run in with another show, Fabulous Cakes from TLC!  There are so many, that my non cake life actually intersected with another show!!  It reminded me of the scene in Drop Dead Gorgeous where the two film crews run into each other and start chatting about their respective gigs.  It’s a funny movie, rent it.

Case in point, Next Great Baker, the spin-off, yes I said spin-off of Cake Boss.  Filming wrapped recently on this contestant driven show where Buddy picks the winner who will receive a cash prize as well as an internship at his bakery.  This gives him the dubious honor of being a part of the saturation of cake shows as well as the unfortunate onslaught of New Jersey based television!  The series will air soon with the finale, filmed in front of a bunch of college students, slated for January.  So what’s the over/under on when the winner’s name will leak on Facebook?

Exhibit B: Staten Island Cakes.  This new show from our mothership, WEtv, has yet to roll camera, but a call for clients has been issued in the Staten Island area. Like Buddy’s flagship program, this series will focus on some 20 year old kid who owns(?) a bakery and his fabulous cake talents.  First of all, how the @%&! does a kid get handed the keys to a business at 20?  He can’t even buy champagne to make a champagne cake!!  Secondly, 20 years old?  Third. he’s really 20?

It is just too much.  I love cake and I love seeing our peers join us in TV land, but the networks are out of control.  Fabulous Cakes has three different shops per episode!  Literally everyone is going to be on TV within the next couple years and you’re going to see a move towards more inexperienced decorators because they are prettier or zanier and that isn’t good for our industry.  We’re at the tipping point my friends. Don’t believe me, let’s run it down:

Holy crap!  And three of those are just about cupcakes!!!!  Listen networks, I love seeing our people well represented and all, but this is getting crazy.  And with that, I’d like to mention I have a great show I’d like to pitch about our shop….

Also, owning a cupcake truck does not make you a pastry chef.  Just saying.

Many have suggested that Charles Darwin should be credited and praised for coming up with “the best idea that anyone has ever had.” That accolade may be deserved more today than ever before. Each new scientific advance in the fields of genetics and embryonic development (evo-devo) has provided and continues to provide new lines of evidence that support the fact of evolution and the theory of natural selection.

What fascinated me most about What Darwin Never Knew was the discussion surrounding DNA switches that turn genes on or off. The narrator tells us, “We now know that DNA works in many different ways, through genes that make the stuff of our bodies, through switches that turn those genes on and off, and through sequences of DNA’s chemicals that throw those switches. Taken together, what this all adds up to is a way that we can, at last, understand how small differences in DNA can generate enormous change.”

Katie Pollard, a biologist who is an expert on the DNA of chimpanzees, explains: “Given all the obvious differences between humans and chimps, you might expect our DNA to be really different. But, in fact, it’s more like 99 percent identical. … Basically, you can make massive changes, just changing those switches. So a small change, a couple of DNA letters, could have a profound effect.”

We’ve heard people say “it’s all in the genes,” but perhaps the more accurate trope is “it’s all in the gene switches.”

Because it was so cold on the East Coast, the crew decided they couldn’t go back to the shore (yet) and instead headed down to Miami Beach. I mean, we all know that in reality the show producers just wanted to shoot as soon as possible so they could air new episodes and Miami was the only place hot enough in March. But still, who cares? As you read this, The Situation, Snooki, Pauly D, Sammi, Ronnie, Vinny, J-Woww and Angelina – yes, Angelina is back! – are back in Seaside shooting a third season.

But, until that starts airing in 2011, we have at least a dozen episodes of Miami madness. It all begins below, though, and you’ll get plenty of terrible quotes, uncomfortable situations, tanning, gorilla juice heads, partying, fist pumping and house music.

Who might be joining him? Names like Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Bret Michaels and others have all been rumored.

Ellen made her announcement to leave the hit show on Twitter yesterday when she wrote “Dim the lights … I’ve voted myself off American Idol.” Apparently, though, she made the decision a few months ago though because she was too busy and didn’t like being mean to the contestants.

DioGuardi, on the other hand, didn’t leave the show on her own, but was fired.

Show producers have plenty of time to figure this all out, though. The 10th season of American Idol doesn’t start filming until auditions being in Nashville this July.

Well, guess what?  In an era where fact checking is more a myth akin to unicorns, somehow the gang over at TMZ (the Thirty Mile Zone) has become one of the most reliable entertainment news sources on the planet.  How have they done it?  Former lawyer Harvey Levin and his minions have shunned the traditional gatekeeper model and largely present totally unbiased and unfiltered news stories.  Obviously, there is still an element of deciding what to post on the site and when, but the information is about as raw as you can get it.

If you watch the nightly news magazine show from TMZ, you get a glimpse into what Entertainment Tonight used to be back in the early 80s.  Their cameras provide no editorial, no pre-paid industry slant, they just show you exactly what happened from the unflinching eye of a video camera.  There is no agent spinning actor’s words, no rehearsed statement about their latest project, it is just them, being them.  In a way, it is remarkably refreshing!

And think about it, this is nothing new.  Back before the internet and television assaulted us with daily entertainment news, newsreels and glossy once a month magazines gave fans these little daily glimpses into stars lives.  Photo shoots in Rock Hudson’s kitchen or 30 seconds of home movies from Lucy and Desi.  They carried that raw quality, unfiltered and honest.

TMZ is upholding the herald of journalism at a time when the entertainment news shows are on the decline.  Have you seen Extra lately?  Or Access Hollywood?  The Insider has turned into sports radio-esque shouting matches!  A panel of four or five “experts” all screaming soundbites that we heard in the tease before the commercial break anyway.  Remember when they ganged up on Gary Coleman? Toss in E! News and you’ve got four shows that all “report” the same story every night.  Funny how that works, or did you think the studios didn’t pay them for what they do?  They’re all in pockets and getting sheckles to be nightly PR spokesmen for anyone and everyone.

TMZ just lets what happens happen.  Sure they have to bury some stories, gatekeeping to a certain degree what they show, but when they do it show it, it is literally all there for you to decide, along with some snarky comments which most of us can agree are kind of funny.

Is it paparazzi bottom feeding?  Well, yes and no.  The segments that air all have the audio of both cameraman and star, and the banter is usually very light and very friendly.  If the “mark” is unresponsive, they let them go without chase or hassle (usually one or two questions before they give up) and I hear more “please” and “thank you” out of TMZ employees than the entirety of the current U.S. high school system.  They’re not stalking people at their homes, as most encounters are in public places like parking lots or LAX airport. And let’s face the facts people, 90% of those are far from an accident.  You ever wonder what a Hollywood publicist does?  Put two and two together and bam, TMZ “catches” you at the Starbucks in Calabasas.  ”Oh, I’m so shocked you found me out buying toothpaste at Target in my $10,000 outfit from Kitson!”  Not.

Now, we can all argue about the validity of their so-called news and its subsequent value, but the “by the people, for the people” system they’ve installed is an important lesson in today’s information environment.  Too many news outlets have succumb to the hunger for content and disguise reports as real when in fact they are hearsay and occasionally, paid for advertisements.  Maybe someone does pay TMZ to film their client leaving Mr. Chow’s on a Friday night, but ultimately, even if what they say is rehearsed, the footage is there for our brains to absorb and decipher at will.  As a society fueled by free speech and free will, isn’t that all we really want from our news?

Let me give the uninitiated a little background on the name.

Back in the early days of Big Brother, host Chen had numerous favorite scripted words and movements, as seen in the telling video below. Fans, not so affectionately, nicknamed her in response to her robotic mannerisms and sayings.

Chen admitted in an interview with AOL television, that her best friend from college broke the news to her that fans were making fun of her performance as the BB Host. Although she sure looked peeved tonight when Matt let loose with the name, she stated in the earlier interview, “The Chenbot thing, I think people thought I’d be offended by it, but a lot of people don’t know my sense of humor and I thought it was so funny. I bought Chenbot posters and had them framed and have one up in the office. My husband’s assistant bought Chenbot mugs because she knew I thought it was funny.”

Later , she made a point of poking fun at herself in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, by stating “I am the Chenbot.”

Although her botlike mannerisms have improved a bit since 2000, I’m not buying the fact that she thinks it is funny, cause like they say in the movies, “the truth hurts,” which was evidenced by her response during tonight’s show.

Anderson, who was most recently seen on Dancing With The Stars, was set to reveal her new PETA ad in her home country of Canada, but when she arrived in Montreal she was told that officials had banned the ad.  The ad, where Anderson is clad in a little blue bikini with writing showing the cuts of meat on an animal, was deemed “sexist” by Canadian officials.

“In a city that is known for its exotic dancing and for being progressive and edgy, how sad that a woman would be banned from using her own body in a political protest over the suffering of cows and chickens,” said Anderson in a statement to Us Magazine.  ”In some parts of the world, women are forced to cover their whole bodies with burqas — is that next? I didn’t think that Canada would be so puritanical.”

A Montreal official explained their reasoning for turning down the permit.  ”It is not so much controversial, as it goes against all principles public organisations are fighting for in the everlasting battle between men and women.”

PETA’s senior vice president, Dan Matthews said he thinks the officials in Montreal have confused “sexist” with “sexy.”

This is not the first time Anderson’s been in trouble for her PETA ads.  In September of 2009, CNN refused to air a commercial of the actress stripping for the “animal rights” group.

Former Dallas Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson is apparently part of the cast of Survivor: Nicaragua, which is currently filming.  Johnson, who is 67 years old and known for his perfect/immobile hair, will be fighting against an currently unnamed cast to keep his torch lit.

CBS is neither confirming nor denying Johnson’s involvement in the show, stating they don’t comment on casting speculations.  However, Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas broke the news of the legend’s casting, citing an unnamed source.  Johnson will be the second Cowboy to take part in the show’s run.  Former Cowboys quarterback Gary Hogeboom was a contestant on Survivor: Guatemala, where he finished in seventh place.

Since the show has only a brief filming schedule (39 days), Johnson will be back in plenty of time to take part in his job as an analyst for FOX’s NFL pre-game show.  Johnson, who lead the Cowboys to two Super Bowl wins in the 1990s, has been with FOX since 2000.

The rumor is we should expect to see an announcement by CBS about the rest of the cast members announced mid-August.  The twist this season is supposedly going to be pitting the under 30 crowd against the older contestants.

I guess I’m not as familiar with the world’s workings as I once thought.

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Nicole “Snooki” polizzi, Jenni “JWoww” Farley, and Paul “Pauly D” DelVecchio have officially won the battle against MTV. The four Jersey Shore reality stars will be making $30,000 per episode beginning next season. To think that these kids only made $5,000 per episode during the first season and only $10,000 per episode for the second season.

But what about the other castmates? Well, Vinny GuDagnino, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, and Sammi Giancola will be making less money than their striking counterparts. And Angelina Pivarnick won’t even be around next season….but I don’t see that causing a lot of upset, for some reason.

But the big paycheck isn’t the only way that some of the reality show’s stars are making bank from their newfound stardom. Apparently, Pauly D pulls in a crapload of money during his DJ gigs (a source reports $80,000 a week), and Snooki earns up to $20,000 for personal appearances.

Gag me.

But Chris Isaak might just be the man for the job.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Isaak has met with American Idol producers twice already regarding possibly taking Cowell’s place as a judge on the show.

Fox insists that a decision doesn’t have to be reached immediately; however, no one can deny that the tenth season of Idol is looming, and America wants someone to sit in Cowell’s chair.

Fox’s new entertainment chairman confirms that the network expects the new judge to join the audition roadshow by September. But will it be Isaak, who boasts television credits including Chris Isaak Show and guest star appearances on Cold Case and Smallville?

Or another music industry hottie like Harry Connick Jr.? Personally, I’m rooting for Harry. I just love his smooth music and hot bod. Rawr.

Whoever Fox chooses, I have a feeling that the new judge will have a lot to live up to. Simon was the cynical heart of the show, and I know that I, for one, will have a hard time watching next season. I’ll just miss his snarky quips far too much.

The Runaways

Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart as 70s rocker girls? Hell yeah, sign me up. I’m sure this one has more melodrama than it needs, and a tab bit of overacting from Stewart, but I still want to see her rock out as Joan Jett in this one, which is based on Neon Angel, the memoirs written by Cherie Currie, who is played by Fanning in the film. Yup, she’s all grown up, and looking good. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.

Cop Out

Kevin Smith directs the first movie he didn’t write with this piece of work, and the results are about what you expect. Two mismatched cops who must work together to get back a stolen baseball card. Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan star as the dysfunctional duo, and although it has its moments, Cop Out is nothing like Smith’s earlier films except that it falls back on the toilet humor that he’s known for, which almost makes it seem like he’s trying too hard. Oh wait, he is.

The Losers

Action, betrayal, revenge – The Losers has everything you want in a comic-turned-film movie. When a Special Forces unit is sent to the Bolivia jungle, they get double-crossed and are presumed dead. They use that to their advantage, and go undercover to clear their names, and even the score. Jason Patric, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, and Jeffrey Dean-Morgan star. I haven’t seen it, and don’t really care to, so you let me know.

Jersey Shore UNCENSORED Season One

How can you not love a show that has someone named Snooki in it? Apparently a lot of people can’t, but I’m not one of them. While I have no interest whatsoever in Jersey Shore, I realize its appeal, about eight over-the-top young adults and their personal lives, and what attracts people to it. I’m not going to sit here and bash it, because frankly – I don’t have the time. I have a bunion that needs removing, and I’m already five minutes late.

And MTV is getting a little aggravated by the cast’s demands. In fact, one source reported to TMZ: “The show is not about famous rich people with managers coming to the Shore.” Indeed. It’s about a group of Italian-American drunks who like to go to the gym, do laundry, and go tanning.

MTV producers are getting so tired of the prima donna attitude of the show’s cast that they are thinking of cutting a few of the self-proclaimed “guidos and guidettes” loose. The only three cast members that they deem as truly necessary to the show are Snooki, The Situation, and Pauly D.

And now the cast is on strike. TMZ says, “The cast was supposed to begin shooting ‘at home’ scenes today for season three, but we’re told JWoww, Ronnie, Sammi, Pauly D and Vinny—who are spread out between New York and Rhode Island—told the crews they weren’t shooting without new contracts.”

I find it hard to sympathize with these kids. I mean, they get paid a crapload of money to go to bars, fist-pump the air, and drink loads of booze. Hell…I do that for free.

Donald Trump seems to believe so at least.  TMZ has learned that three weeks ago the corporate giant contacted Woods’ mistress number one, Rachel Uchitel, to offer her a spot on the next season of The Celebrity Apprentice.  When asked why Trump said that Uchitel would be “awesome” on the show.

Would she even take a position?  ”Absolutely,” said Uchitel when asked by TMZ.

Ultimately the decision is in the hands of NBC, but this is Donald Trump we’re talking about.  The man makes money hand over fist and I wouldn’t be surprised if he had at one of his many residencies a money pit not unlike Scrooge McDuck from Ducktales.  I’m sure NBC will fall in line.

After Elin took a golf club to Tiger Woods’ SUV, it was revealed that Woods had started his long line of affairs with Uchitel.  Later on it was revealed that the dark haired lady had also had an affair with Bones star David Boreanaz, though it had occurred before her romp with Woods.  Boreanaz revealed the infidelity before Uchitel and the press could.

So what makes this girl so special that she lands not one, but two famous men for relationships (even if they are extramarital)?  No idea, but obviously Donald Trump sees something there.

Andrews has filed a civil lawsuit in the State Court of Chicago against a string of hotels.  In the suit, Andrews claims that the hotels, which include Marriott and Radisson, let her stalker know her room number and allowed him to check in to adjacent rooms to hers.  The stalker of Andrews, Michael David Barrett, taped the ESPN star through modified peepholes in her hotel doors.

“Erin filed the lawsuit to send a message to hotel chains that they need to exercise greater care in protecting their guests. She was seriously harmed by what happened there,” said Andrews’ attorney Marshall Grossman to TMZ in an interview.

Hopefully this pans out for Andrews.  Earlier this month the courts shut down an attempt by ESPN to collect over $300,000 from Barrett for the extra expenses they had to pay (mainly for security) because of Barrett’s actions.  Barrett claimed to be “penniless” and felt he shouldn’t foot the bill for a third party.  The documents filed in California’s District Court seemed to agree, stating that ESPN voluntarily paid for all costs in respect to Andrews.

The blond journalist was most recently seen competing on the popular reality show Dancing with the Stars where she placed third.

Big Brother

Even more surprising and disheartening, is the fact that the pranks will come to an abrupt halt now with Annie booted off the show, and it is partially her fault. Why not play with some grace and brains, and at least try to be friendly after landing in the hot seat? She made herself a target, after the fact, with her bitchiness and angry outbursts. Heck, I’m not even in the house with her and I couldn’t wait to see the door hit her in the rear. As one insightful reality fan stated on Facebook, “Well that saboteur on Big Brother was a dud… this doesn’t bode well for the rest of the season…”

Lane (the Beast), Hayden, (the Animal), Matt, (the Brains) and Enzo, (Meow Meow) were the real instigators behind the demise of the mole, and you can bet they will be unbearable in their glee, during the next few days.

So unless CBS has a “plan B,” we will all lose out on the torture that America was plotting to inflict on the house guests, via the saboteur. Let’s hope the showmance between Brendon and Rachel is tantalizing enough to keep us interested.

The Oprah Winfrey Show has hit an all time low with ratings recently slipping below the 3.0 mark.  Since the show’s inception it has never gone below said mark.

The show faced a few issues in the recent weeks, but it’s nothing it hasn’t handled before.  The show was in repeats leading up to a holiday and for two days during the week the show was preempted in favor of Wimbledon coverage in 14 markets.  These could be the major factors in the slip but I have another theory.

With the launch of Oprah’s new network, OWN, a contest was launched to give a regular person a chance at having their own reality program.  There were many categories to apply to like Talk Show, Health Show, and a Wildcard category for those who didn’t fit in the others.  One individual rose to the top like a balloon- Zack Anner.  Zack was born with cerebral palsy (which he says “is the sexiest of the palsies”) and made a hilarious video about how he’d like to make a travel show for folks who never thought they could travel.

The controversy started when all of a sudden a woman named Dr. Phylis, an almost carbon copy of Oprah herself, took the number one spot from Zack in a matter of 20 minutes.  Because of the wonders of the Internet, fans saw that Dr. Phylis seemed to gain two votes for every one vote given to Zack.  This sparked search terms like “Oprah hates the handicapped” to pop up on Google Trends.

While I’m sure Oprah herself had nothing to do with what happened, it does look like one of her executives decided to take matters into their own hands and dethrone Zack from his number one spot.  In my not so humble opinion, this is probably the main reason for ratings slippage.

With Larry King’s announced retirement, speculation over his successor on the rise.  It seems that Morgan has risen to the top and is now poised to take over.  The UK news site The Sun reported today that Morgan has signed a £5.5 million four-year deal with CNN for the job.  ”He agreed to work 30 weeks a year for the annual £1.4million salary and is expected to move to the States,” says the article.

The only foreseeable problem is Morgan’s judging spot on America’s Got Talent.  The show is owned by NBC, who also runs MSNBC.  It was assumed that the network, who has a contract with Morgan, would never allow him to work for a competing news network.  If The Sun’s report is true, did Morgan get out of his contract with NBC or will he continue to judge America’s Got Talent?

What many Americans don’t know is before Morgan graced our small screens by judging odd acts, he was the editor of both Britain’s Mirror newspaper and News of the World. He’s a serious journalist who (I think) would excel in the position King has left vacant.  Other folks reportedly considered for the job were Ryan Seacrest and Katie Couric, but Morgan apparently wow’d the execs during his interviews.

So what do you think?  Is Piers Morgan the best choice to take over for Larry King or should they keep looking?

Fans of The Hills were given a huge “shock” during the final moments of the series finale on Tuesday, July 13. They watched as Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner had an emotional good-bye, where Kristin allegedly was off to Europe to get in touch with herself.

But as Brody stood on an empty street watching her go, the cameras panned out, and the illusion was forever broken: Brody stood in a Hollywood lot with camera crews surrounding him…and Kristin’s car was parked several feet away. She came out of her car, hugged Brody, and that was the end of the reality show that had engrossed fans for six seasons.

I, for one, am not shocked. At all.

Brody even told fans on the after show that it was up to them to decide what was really real and what was really scripted. After all, it wasn’t all fake. Heidi and Spencer did get legally married. And I’m sure not all of the relationships were scripted.

But I have to bow my head to producers for taking the jump and letting the world know that those lovable, catty folks from The Hills are actors. And I have to chuckle at all of those fans who didn’t realize they were watching drama…not reality.

The Squad: Prison Police focuses on eight special agents whose job is to respond to and look into major crimes that occur in the Tennessee Prison system. These crimes can range from murder and assaults to drugs and organized crime.

The special agents that are the heart of the show represent the police force to those incarcerated in Tennessee Prison. They must act as detectives, CSI and SWAT in order to solve prison crimes and enforce justice. Must be a tough job, but I guess someone’s got to do it (I’m just glad it’s not me).

Each show’s episode will focus on one primary case from beginning to finish as team members investigate the crime and do their best to bring the wrongdoers to justice. I wonder how many of these cases will end up as being “unsolved”…

I have a feeling that my husband is going to love this show. After the many hours of Gangland and Lockdown that I’ve been subjected to, I can add The Squad onto our DVR list for sure.

Phil Donahue featured a wide variety of topics on his show, from everyday subject matters to extremely controversial. Because his early audience was predominately female, he often chose topics that played on the female’s emotions. Such topics included feminism, reproduction, family themes and childbirth. As his audience broadened, so did his subject matters. Controversial guests, such as transsexuals, older strippers, and those involved in various scandals, frequented his show, as well as political figures and celebrities.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, the talk show genre experienced a rapid rise in popularity. New shows, such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Sally Jessy Raphael Show, Geraldo, The Montel Williams Show and Maury, began attracting large audiences, eventually leading to a drop in Donahue’s ratings. As a result, the show was canceled on May 2, 1996. During Donahue’s 26 year run, it received 20 Emmy Awards as well as several nominations. On November 20, 1993, Phil Donahue was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.

FIFA says that 700 million people (out of the around 7 billion in the world) watched the match. The two biggest percentages, of course, came in the home countries. 91% of the audiences in both Spain and the Netherlands watched the game, that’s about 16.8 million people in Spain and over 8.5 million in the Netherlands.

There’s just a special fantastic feeling about watching a dramatic event along with the entire world. Even the Olympics, while it might be a world competition, has so many different events, that it can’t hold the entire world in the palm of its hand, all watching the same thing at the same time, like the World Cup can.

Do we really have to wait another four years?

That’s right. Ochocinco (who has the most ridiculous name ever—his jersey number is 85, and it’s apparent that Chad isn’t fluent in Spanish…otherwise he would have changed his name to Ochenta y cinco) is the star of VH1’s newest reality dating show.

Ochocinco will be joined by Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian during his dating show, Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch, which debuted Sunday, June 11. The premise?
