My Saturday mornings were spent in front of the TV in my footie Smurf pajamas watching the coolest cartoon ever made. As my generation dominates movie making these days, more of our favorite childhood shows are making their way to the big screen.
Coming in August 2011, Papa Smurf and his band of tiny blue forest dwellers are not only coming to the big screen, but they’ll be heading into the city…in 3D. Not just any city, but New York City. Until now, The Smurfs have only existed in a medieval setting, among knights, kings and a variety of magical creatures.
So, how did The Smurfs get into the modern era? By stumbling through a strange portal in the forest during a blue moon. My first question was whether or not my favorite villain, the alchemist Gargamel, would make an appearance.
Sure enough, it was Gargamel’s antics that drove the little blue dudes into the city.
Do we need a Smurf movie? Probably not, but at least it will introduce a whole new generation of kids to one of the greatest cartoons ever made. It gives me hope that I’ll be able to start collecting the original series on DVD… because I’m a dork like that.
Sony Entertainment will also be releasing the trailer this Thursday, so be sure to this post later in the week for an update.
