The big drama on Deadliest Catch on Tuesday, June 15th, had nothing to do with crabs. Instead, it had to do with Jake Harris being an addict.

Jake’s father, Captain Phil Harris, caught his son stealing his pills. After trying to motivate Jake in captaining the Cornelia Marie, Jake continued to slack off and act like a spoiled brat (in my opinion, anyway).

Phil confronted Jake, calling him “a thief and a liar” after witnessing his son stealing his pills, an act which the father and captain referred to as “unthinkable.” Phil told his son that once they return to shore, he wants nothing to do with him.

The episode closed as Jake pled with his father, admitting that he’s an addict and needs help. I feel for both father and son in this situation. As an avid watcher of shows like Intervention, and as someone who has known friends with drug problems, I can imagine the pain and difficulty that these two men went through during their confrontation.

This is just the start of a rocky, downward spiral, as Deadliest Catch fans know that Captain Phil passed away earlier this year. In fact, next week’s episode features the captain suffering a stroke.
