Disney has a Wizard of Oz prequel in the works, and they’ve offered the film to renowned directed Sam Raimi. There’s no news on whether or not Raimi, best known for his involvement in the Spider-Man films and the Evil Dead films (which are my favorites, by the way), has accepted the position offered to him.
Other directors who were up for the gig of directing Oz, the Great and Powerful include Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and Adam Shankman (Hairspray).
But what about this movie? Oz, the Great and Powerful will focus on the magnificent Oz, a Kansas carnie who finds a home in the magical land we’ve all come to know. Robert Downey Jr. was once attached to the film to play the mysterious Oz, but nothing has been confirmed as of now. The script was written by Mitchel Kapner (Romeo Must Die), and Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) is producing. Word on the street is that Disney wants to begin filming this year.
What do you think? Will Raimi accept the offer? And regardless of whether or not he does, will this film turn out to be a classic, or will it just be another let-down? I certainly hope it’s the former rather than the latter.
