The forthcoming HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Fire and Ice” medieval fantasy series, Game of Thrones, is something I am already dying to sink my teeth into.
Martin’s universe is a replica of Medieval Europe. A longtime lover of Medieval history and literature, I personally believe there is just not enough fictional television dedicated to the era. Sure, we get a lot of great documentaries and the occasional Arthurian series from Syfy, but Game of Thrones promises to be slightly more dramatic than Merlyn.
Knights, kings, queens, political scandal and intrigue, magic… and did I mention this has one of my all time favorite actors in it? Sean Bean is set to portray Eddard Stark, with Michelle Fairley cast in the role of Stark’s wife, Catelyn.
HBO optioned the book series back in 2007, and with 2010 halfway spent, we are finally about to see the show the realized. The network has slated Game of Thrones for a spring 2011 debut, which has me asking rather excitedly, “Is it spring yet?”
Oh HBO… how I love you for giving me delicious brain candy to rot my glial cells with. Now, I’m off to the Renaissance Faire to fuel my desire for Medieval goodness. Do not disturb until next Spring.
