The fact that Pretty Little Liars, the television adaptation of Sara Shepard’s teen novel series, debuts tonight on ABC Family has me already groaning with lack of expectation.

The Disney affiliated channel, which has catered to teen girls quite regularly these last couple years, is no place for a Sorority Row/I Know What You Did Last Summer-style television mystery series. Not only will it be missing the gore and fear factor, another, less-family oriented network might provide, but we’ve all seen how television adapts YA novels to suit their own taste.

The book series, which is relatively popular among young adult female readers, focuses on a group of teenage girlfriends who fall apart when their clique leader mysteriously disappears.

Three years later, the three remaining girls start receiving mysterious messages from someone named “A” who threatens to expose all the dirty little secrets they have, secrets only Allison would know.

As much as I fear ABC Family’s adaptation, I will still watch. As mother to a fifteen-year-old book reading maniac, I doubt I’ll be able to get out of it, though try as I might.

Don’t get me wrong, as I can see you getting ready to remind me this is a series for young adults. I’m just a little tired of the liberties television takes when adapting books for the small screen. I’m a cynic, I know.

If you’re looking forward to checking this new series out, be sure to tune in to ABC Family Tuesday, June 8 at 8 PM ET. Be sure to pop back in here after you watch and let me know what you thought of the premiere.
