Re-visioning and re-imagining are incredibly popular trends in Hollywood right now, with more content producers jumping on the bandwagon to put their own spin on stories of old. The purpose, besides the obvious cash potential, to make old tales relative to new generations.

Disney and Tim Burton recently re-imagined Alice in Wonderland, and among future Disney revisionist productions are Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz adaptations.

In light of this popular trend, Brett Ratner and Relativity Media are in the early stages of production on an edgy, 3D re-imagining of the popular, Brothers Grimme tale, Snow White.

The screenplay, written by Melisa Wallack, “Is not your grandfather’s Snow White,” Ratner told the press.

It includes details from the original folktale Walt Disney omitted from his classic animated 1937 production, which to date is still considered one of the best adaptations in film. Ratner also said, “The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we want to do.”

A handful of years ago, I read a series of anthology collections edited by Ellen Datlow and Terrie Windling that re-imagined hundreds of fairytales, often putting a more modern spin on them. Since then, I’ve anxiously anticipated a Snow White film today’s fairytale lovers could really sink their teeth into. This could be it! I would squee, but no one wants to hear that.
