Tom Hank’s fascination of World War II is never-ending. We first saw evidence of his obsession with his starring role in the Academy Award winner Saving Private Ryan. Then Hanks went on to work on the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. Most recently, he acted as executive producer on The Pacific.
But this isn’t the last we’ll see of Hanks working on WWII-centric films and series, I think.
The New York Times spoke with Hanks about his thoughts on The Pacific and his love for World War II history.
On November 2nd, the 10-part Pacific series will be released by HBO Home Entertainment, complete with special features. So what can we expect from the box set of The Pacific? Hanks states, “With Blu-Ray, and all the menus and information that you can put on it, you have all the makings-of. You have all the profiles of the guys themselves. You’ll be able to punch into maps and interactive field guides.” That’s hardcore.
When asked if The Pacific was a type of “last hurrah” for World War II storytelling, Hanks replied, “Sometimes I would say, What themes are left that can withstand the scrutiny of 10 hours? There might not be.” But with miniseries after miniseries that Hanks has been involved with, I have a feeling that The Pacific isn’t the last World War II miniseries we’ll see.

I find it amusing that Hanks ponders what themes can stand up to 10 hours of scrutiny because I felt The Pacific failed that test. The first 4 hours were sluggish at best, with maybe about half of the overall series living up to the role of Band of Brothers little brother.

Aw, man, I have to say you may be right. In all honesty, I missed the first few episodes but quickly fell in love with it partway through.

--Ad nauseum PC WWII recycling aside-- FACT IS ---having made BILLIONS upon BILLIONS outsourcing for cheap labor --and unflinchingly catering to the franchise slum denial needs of history's --MOST-- awesomely genocidal regime -bar none! ---ACROSS the Pacific. And BTW ---are we the ONLY ones noticing that the genuinely, indeed, urgently, staggeringly relevant 60th Anniversary of the KOREAN WAR and legacy is being, once again, 'mysteriously overlooked' by one and all? NOT LOOKIN' GOOD ----WAY! NOT LOOKIN' GOOD
