Food Network launched the Cooking Channel on Monday, May 31, their second 24-hour cooking central television station. Scripps, the corporation that owns Food Network, announced their decision to kick off a second channel was prompted by a growing demand for food-central advertising and viewership.

In their line-up, they will be introducing six new shows featuring television cooking show favorites Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse.

The Cooking Channel replaces the Fine Living Network, an unsuccessful channel that featured do-it-yourself informational shows. Over time, Scripps discovered they needed to get on the marketing wagon and compete with larger networks and the demand from foodies for more cooking series.

John Seintlauf, the senior vice president for ad sales for Scripps Networks, said, “When you see Fox lining up its third Gordon Ramsay cooking show in prime time, I think food’s arrived as a mainstream genre.”

And it’s not just Ramsay racking up viewers, but popular shows like Top Chef and Iron Chef America, as well, contributing to this delicious new genre.

I’ll definitely be checking out the Cooking Channel. There’s just something about watching Bobby Flay cook up good eats that makes my tummy rumble. Hopefully they’ll find some way to get Gordon Ramsay on there as well. Now that I’d like to see.
