“For me, when I look at a lot of what’s available on television and I see how women treat each other, it’s stunning to me; it’s arresting,” said Sarah Jessica Parker, commenting on the variety of shows in which women function primarily to gossip about men, complain about being tired, and back stab each other. It is certainly true that Gossip Girl and Top Model are no place for women to look to for role models, so I started trying to think of the female characters on TV that I thought were strong. Peggy on Mad Men is a strong independent female, and so is pretty much every woman on Law & Order. There’s that chick with the razor sharp chin on Fox News, and she’s strong, even if she’s 70% water and 30% pure unadulterated evil.
Not to mention that the Sex And The City girls spend most of their time shopping or gossiping about men, which isn’t exactly the woman empowerment circle of power.
But they do actually treat each other like human beings, whereas the women of Top Model treat each other like they’re on opposite sides of an ethnic conflict.
I say if you want strong female characters go to True Blood, cuz those chicks are all about telling the guy vampires to stop being such whiny pussies and getting laid whenever they feel like it, and as Gloria Steinhem always said, “The hallmark of any true feminist is that they be confrontational with their vampire boyfriends, and then have sex with them.”
