Two of the most amazing things from my childhood are celebrating their 30th anniversaries this weekend: Pacman and Empire Strikes Back. It’s hard to believe it’s been thirty years since Pacman fever reigned, but even harder to believe that this is the weekend I got sick at the movie theatre because I made my dad take me to see Empire Strikes Back and didn’t tell him I had the flu.
My friends and I played Pacman on the Atari nonstop, and when we weren’t playing on the Atari, we were at the local arcade feeding quarters into the console. I even raised my daughter on Pacman, and today she can be found with her Gameboy in the corner chomping pellets and chasing ghosts all over the maze.
Google is celebrating the anniversary with a special Pacman game you can play right on your search screen, but if you don’t feel like leaving the site and opening Google up, I embedded a Pacman game you can play right here:
1980 was a life-shaping year, as Empire Strikes Back hit theatres too. Along with playing Pacman, my friends and I also played Star Wars, reliving the new movie as best we could since we wouldn’t be able to watch it outside the theatre for years after it was released. We could often be found parading around with cardboard laser guns, me with my hair in cinnamon buns, our Han Solo telling Chewbacca (the neighbor’s dog) to “Laugh it up, Fuzzball.”
The world wasn’t like it is today, but both Pacman and Empire Strikes Back had a huge impact on the youth of yesteryear. Even if you weren’t alive in 1980, you’ve heard of and probably enjoyed both at some point during the last thirty years.
Take a moment to celebrate today. I mean, come on… It’s not every day Han Solo gets frozen in carbonite.

You aren't kidding. Star Wars was a huge influence on everyone I knew and Pac Man was THE game everyone wanted to play. If only I had all those quarters now...

i was born 1980...and i have a special place in my heart for both pac and empire. I grew up on atari and pacman arcade until i meet mr.mario and things really took off. And while i didn't catch empire when it first hit theatres i most certainly remember when it came out on tape. The hoth scene was the best ever. They just don't entertain you like they did in those days. Simple, cool, imaginative ...and it worked :) And your imagination took it alot further.

you know that it is apparent that i most certainly agree. pack man and starwars have had a major influence on the general public and i dont think these great things should go unnoticed. it is a very important time in everyones lives to remember the games and movies that shaped us so.

Indeed, a wonderful game in it's time. I can't help thinking however that in terms of interesting times, Venter's arificial life-form is more exciting!

Yes, I was there in the movie theaters as a teenager. I grew up with the Original Star Wars. I have a friend who is currently watching the Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. She wasn't even born when the Empire Strikes back or Return of the Jedi was out in the Theaters. Me and my brother played Pacman on the original gaming system... the Atari. One black paddle stick with a red button. Very simple and easy to use. Not complicated and confusing with all the buttons on the Xbox controller. I sill can't play the xbox to save my life. But I can sure play Pacman on the computer!! Nothing like the fun times when I was just a kid! Pacman was king of the hill in its day, and was our favorite game until Wolf3D and DOOM showed up. That became a new addiction...

Am I the only one a little creeped out that Luke was about to makeout with his sister in the trailer. I mean I know they don't know that and all but to imply it... *shudders*

Jess, there was actually a book that came out between Star Wars and Empire that suggested even deeper romantic undertones between Luke and Leia. SO GROSS.

I was a champion on this game -- could play for a couple of hours on one quarter !!(after having spent a lot of quarters and time practicing) But now with these little arrows I fail --- I cannot do anything without the joy stick ! Somewhere is the piece of paper with my top score on it -- written by my 5 year old daughter !! Ahhh such fun --- and I was about age 50 back then !

I was a child during the 80s but I remember my sister and I playing Pacman (which I loved) on my father's Atari. There was alot of Star War merchandise when I was a child such as the glowing swords (which never realy went away). It is interesting to see how technology has changed over the years. Now we have Nitendo and Playstation we no loner have 8 tracks or cassets and now we have Dvds instead of videotapes.

Pacman and The Empire Strikes back are a pivotal point in movies and gaming because they were the next step up from Pong and Star Wars. These have led gaming, computers and interactivity to what we have today. I know I am getting old when we are celebrating 30 year anniversaries of popular games.

I was born in 1975. Got my first Atari 2600 when I was 7, I think?!? Loved it to death, literally! Pac-Man cost something like 20 bucks! Have since owned just about every system up through X-Box 360. (my wife hates all games, except Soduko) Oh, BTW I'm a master at Starwars trivial pursuit=)
