When I was a child, the worst punishment my parents could give me was to tell me I wasn’t allowed to watch Power Rangers.
I was a kid when the first group of Rangers stepped foot on television, capturing the attention of myself and kids just like me. Soon the cast changed, movies came out, and popularity rose to an all time high. Haim Saban watched over his Power Rangers empire until 2001, when Disney bought him out.
Saban has taken back control of the show and has now signed a deal to move it to Nickelodeon, Disney’s biggest competitor. Nickelodeon will air 20 new shows that Saban will produce as well as a catalog of over 700 shows. The deal is supposedly worth approximately $100 million, but Saban declined to comment.
Power Rangers started out as The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which debuted in 1993.
Most of the shots were low-budget recycled footage from Japan with American actors dubbing over them. Disney acquired the series for $3.2 billion, but as the show’s popularity faded, Power Rangers was banished to the cable channel Jetix (now Disney XD).
“I think this property has significant legs going forward if it’s in an environment where it is nurtured and supported as opposed to being part of a huge portfolio,” Saban said. “Power Rangers can flourish and be more impactful than it has been for the past five years.”
While Disney says the show no longer fits their programming direction, Nickelodeon has been looking for more shows that would appeal to young boys. ”This fits in nicely as we are doing more things specifically for boys, and we are excited to add proven properties to our original slate,” Nickelodeon President Cyma Zarghami said.
I think this calls for me to go dig my old Power Rangers action figures out of my parents’ basement and have a celebration.
