Friday May 7 is a great night for television. Friday Night Lights, one of the best/most unheralded shows on TV, returns to network television for its penultimate fourth season. Sure, it has already aired in its entirety on DirectTV, but not everyone has that. So, for the majority of us, tonight we finally find out what happens when Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) leaves the Dillon Panthers and moves to a brand new school and team.
When Friday Night Lights first premiered in 2006, it was originally thought to be a half-assed television spin off. (It’s based on a novel that was adapted into a movie). Producers Jason Katmis and Peter Berg quick dismissed those preconceived notions, though, and delivered viewers not only one of the best family dramas on television, but one of the most exciting sports shows as well.
It’s also gives a rare, realistic glimpse at what actual high school is like. No breaking into song here. Just kids, being kids, playing football and dealing with real world issues.
As we left our characters last year, the town of Dillon was being rezoned so certain players could play for the high powered Panthers. Coach Taylor didn’t agree with this so, he was forced out and now finds himself the coach at the smaller East Dillon High. However his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), is still the principal at Dillon proper. Uh oh. Let the drama continue.
If you haven’t jumped on the Friday Night Lights bandwagon before, Friday is probably a good night to start. It’s almost like a reboot to the series as many of the main kids have graduated. And, from what the early reviews have said, the show is just as good as ever. Even if you don’t like football, you will love Friday Night Lights. 8 p.m. EST Friday night can’t come soon enough.
