Harry Connick Jr. was the guest mentor this week on American Idol, helping the top five contestants refine their style in order to pull off Frank Sinatra tunes.

Unfortunately for four of the top five, Sinatra was just too big an icon for them to wrap their minds and their voices around. Even with Connick Jr.’s tutelage, the Idol hopefuls struggled to embody the essence and swagger that was Sinatra’s style, all except for Lee Dewyze, who has really come out of his shell over the last few weeks.

As well as tutoring the contestants, Connick Jr. also appeared onstage behind the keys, adding his signature to each song.

I love Harry Connick Jr. and Frank Sinatra. There is a romantic timelessness to the music they create, and I was really looking forward to this episode of American Idol. Sadly, it was a bit of a disappointment.

Not even Mama Sox was able to garner my applause Tuesday night, and I fear on Wednesday we may kiss Casey James goodbye.

Those are the breaks when you play with the big boys. Don’t forget to tune in Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET after Lie to Me to find out who goes home next on American Idol.
