When I first heard Seth McFarlane was planning on spinning Cleveland Brown from The Family Guy his own series, I groaned. It took me years to actually let my hair down so I could enjoy The Family Guy, and I still have serious issues with American Dad.

The Cleveland Show tends to be mind-bendingly absurd most days, and I’m pretty sure if I looked into my crystal ball, I wouldn’t see it lasting much beyond this first season. I could be wrong, but we’ll see.

McFarlane has resorted to bizarre child and baby behavior on The Family Guy, making Stewie Griffin one of the most memorable characters on the adult cartoon circuit. Most times when watching The Cleveland Show, I feel like he’s regurgitating the same old stuff he did in The Family Guy, trying to meld Rallo Tubbs into the next Stewie. Not going to happen.

I did find this clip from the upcoming, May 2 episode of the show rather funny though. Kanye West makes a cartoon appearance on the show, singing in his robot voice and calling himself the “Black Zack Efron.”

The new episode of The Cleveland Show airs this Sunday on FOX in the 8:30 p.m. time slot, followed by a special one-hour episode of The Family Guy.
