Television shows about addiction and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) such as Intervention, Hoarding: Buried Alive, Obsessed, and Addicted have been ruling the screen lately. So why not address more disorders and issues?
E! announced that it will air a documentary mini-series called What’s Eating You? focused on eating disorders. The day after the network made this announcement, the Oprah Winfrey Network announced the addition of Inside Rehab, an eight-episode series that focuses on eating disorder patients as they go through an intensive recovery program at a treatment facility.
What’s Eating You? is scheduled to air this fall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, some samples of the show’s topics include: “a woman who eats a roll of toilet paper dipped in pickle juice every night before bed; another who lives in seclusion and feels compelled to eat twigs, pencil erasers and super-glue; and an aspiring model whose body is so starved that she physically smells because her body literally is eating itself alive.”
Gross, ladies. Just gross.
I have to say that I’m looking forward to watching these shows, and I fully intend on eating an entire large pepperoni pizza while watching these diseased girls struggle with their self-esteem.

As a note, eating disorders are not simply caused by "low self-esteem". They have biological influences, like addictions. Low self-esteem is terrible, but it is mearly a symptom of mental illness, not the illness itself.

Eating disorders are extremely serious and complex and should be dealt with accordingly. Data reported by the American Psychiatric Association suggests that of all psychiatric disorders, the greatest excess of patient mortality due to natural and unnatural causes is associated with eating disorders and substance abuse. For more information on the treatment and prevention of eating disorders visit the Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center at www.edreferral.com.

Seems I pushed a few buttons, Anon and Noel. I absolutely think eating disorders are serious illnesses. I suppose my "making light of this topic" is because of how ridiculous it is that we TV addicts are drawn to shows portraying such horrible conditions. In closing, all I say is: hey--my sense of humor isn't for everyone.

Dear Kimberly, Although your request was extremely polite, I'm afraid I am unable to do so. Have a great day!
