The producers of America’s Got Talent and NBC execs are teaming up with YouTube to make the show’s audition process an online affair.

Beginning today (April 26), wannabe contestants have the option of uploading their videos on a special page of YouTube to be considered for the summer season of the series. The show’s producers will select 40 videos from all those submitted. These 40 acts will be placed on a special “Got Talent” YouTube channel for users across the world to vote on. When all is said and done, a total of 12 acts from YouTube submissions will be selected to perform live on America’s Got Talent.

Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President of alternative programming at NBC states that this new audition process “offers our viewers not only a priceless golden ticket to get onto the biggest stage in the country in the middle of the competition, but also the opportunity for a thrilling live show where anything can happen.” Right.

It’s a priceless golden ticket. I, for one, have a hard time swallowing that.

So, I’m wondering: was this new online audition process just a way to create more buzz for the show, or was it created because of a lack of talent in the current submissions? Only the big wigs at NBC can know the truth to that one.
