Saturday night marked the premier of BBC’s Doctor Who in America, featuring an all new incarnation of “The Doctor” and a fresh-faced new companion at his side.
Reports say average viewership for the series relaunch on BBCA was around 1.2 million viewers, making it the most watched show in BBCA history. BBCA also noted that the premier set a second record for them, as they ranked #2 in the 25-54 year old demographic of viewers among ad-supported cable networks.
As a longtime fan of Doctor Who, and a huge lover of the last incarnation, portrayed by David Tennant, I was skeptical about Matt Smith’s ability to pull off the role. I was pleasantly surprise by his performance. Smith is the youngest actor in history to portray The Doctor, which has the potential to draw in a younger audience, prolonging the series’ long-running success.
Smith is currently 28-years-old, taking over the youngest Doctor slot, once held by Peter Davidson, who was 29 when he played “The Doctor.”
If you missed the premier on BBCA last Saturday, they have been rerunning it often. I’ve seen it about five times because I keep losing the remote. So tune in to BBCA, and don’t forget to watch on Saturday night’s at 9 p.m. ET as the new Doctor and his pretty young companion brave time, space and the universe.
