The bearded redhead took to the stage in Eugene, OR, to kick start his The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny On Television tour.
Of course O’Brien received thunderous applause to which he replied, “I’m not supposed to admit this, ladies and gentlemen, but I really missed the applause. You have no idea how shallow I am.”
The main idea of the show was to show O’Brien’s transition from being The Tonight Show host to out of work comedian to stage performer. However, with the cheering fans and the way the show was conducted, THR reporter Erik Penderson wrote, “[...]it was more concert than theater piece — or, more accurately, variety show. O’Brien even went through several costume changes, going as gaudy as he pleased to the crowd’s delight.” During one of his outfit changes, he remarked about his deal with TBS saying, “Right now the people at TBS are watching, going: ‘What the hell? He’s wearing a pink leather outfit?’ ”
O’Brien brought some of his bits from the show onto the stage with new names to try and avoid a collision with NBC.
The Masturbating Bear was transformed into the Self-Pleasuring Panda, the Walker, Texas Ranger Lever was transformed into the Chuck Norris Rural Policeman Handle, and (without any transformation) Triumph the Insult Comic Dog made an appearance. Andy Richter played the dutiful sidekick and even Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock made an appearance.
By all accounts, O’Brien was consistently funny throughout the whole night. Some of the bits got more riotous applause than others, but all in all it was a successful start to what will most definitely be a successful tour.
