Nothing in the world is ever black or white, and the question of homosexuality being a problem in need of a cure has long been a topic among debaters. California has always been considered one of the most liberal states in the country, especially when it comes to support for the gay and lesbian community. Marriage and family counselor, Bonnie Lowenthal is fighting to have the law removed, claiming it is old-fashioned, and no longer serves the purpose it once did. On the other side of the fence is former homosexual turned straight, Richard Cohen, who believes the law is necessary because it promotes research about child predators, and allows people who aren’t comfortable or happy with their sexuality an opportunity to change.
Lowenthal believes that with the abundance of research into sexual predator behavior done in universities and laboratories all across the country, the government has no place using that as an excuse to maintain the law.
