Crystal Bowersox’s Didgeridoo
Crystal Bowersox is one of my favorite American Idol contestants. Truth be told, she’s one of the only ones over the years that I can imagine buying the music of after the show’s season is completed and the winner announced. So, as you can imagine, I watch her performances with equal amounts of awe, joy and that fuzzy feeling inside.
On last night’s performance, Bowersox wowed the judges and the audience when she pulled out and was accompanied by an instrument called the didgeridoo. So what in the world is a didgeridoo? It’s a hollow, wooden tube made of Bambusa Arnhemica, a bamboo species. The mouthpiece is made from the wax of wild bees, which I can only assume smells earthy and sweet—two words that perfectly describe our favorite Idol contestant Bowersox! The instrument was created by Indigenous Australians over 1500 years ago. Wow.
The instrument has a very limited range of notes…so why did Bowersox choose it for her performance? It’s all about the sound, guys. The didgeridoo has an incredibly soothing sound that fit in perfectly with Bowersox’s rendition of the Beatles’ “Come Together.”
Crystal, I’ll be watching you next week. I can’t wait to see what types of tricks you have up your sleeve.
