MSNBC has decided to suspend anchor David Shuster “indefinitely.”

The NY Times reports that the cable news channel is furious at high-profile anchor after discovering that Shuster took part in a test for a new show for CNN, a rival cable news network.  ”The MSNBC president, Phil Griffin, and other executives were said to be furious when they found out about the test through a New York Observer article Friday morning,” said the Times.

When the network heard about the test on Friday, MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said, “If true, this is unacceptable and David will be punished appropriately.”  His indefinite suspension is the result.

Shuster has been a jack-of-all-trades anchor for MSNBC, anchoring for two hours a day, filling in for other anchors when needed, and even sometimes reporting from the field.  He handled last month’s coverage of the Congressional health care debate and was even appointed a substitute for Countdown with Keith Olbermann, which remains the cable channel’s highest rated program.

However, Shuster does not have his own name branded program.  He has drawn ire from the network before after asking in 2008 if Chelsea Clinton was being “pimped out” during her mother’s presidential campaign.  MSNBC suspended Shuster from the channel for two weeks after the incident.

David Shuster’s contract with MSNBC is up at the end of this year.
