I have seen a lot of crazy stuff watching Wife Swap. Families who raise their children without discipline to parents who hire their children to work in the family business to help maintain their personal dreams. Friday took the cake, however, as Wife Swap is back for a new season and the first episode was further out than ever.

The Drago family knows little in the way of want. Jay Drago is a successful Internet entrepreneur, and his wife and three kids are materially pampered and spoiled. Even his nineteen-year-old son lives at home without working, despite his father’s disappointment. Roe Drago is not only shopping-obsessed, but she’s also obsessed with Reborn Dolls, and treats them like they are her own babies.

The Cameron family has raised their children to work hard and reap the rewards.

Running a coffee shop and a hotdog stand to sustain their three kids, one of the greatest issues they face is the thirty-year age gap between Theresa and her husband Dave. While it’s not a problem for them as a couple, Dave is old-fashioned, overprotective and doesn’t believe pampering or spoiling their kids will get them anywhere in life.

As usual, the Wife Swap producers have pit two bizarro families against one another, in hopes that they learn a little bit about how the other half lives. One family holds their kids so tight, they don’t know the meaning of the word freedom, while the other gives their kids so much freedom, they don’t understand boundaries.

Drama and emotions run high as these two families struggle to understand each other’s lifestyles. Roe Drago has a hard time understanding Dave Cameron’s unyielding passion for his wife’s coffee shop, which is financially going under. While at work, they get a call from the power company that the electric is about to be turned off, as they owe over $600 in past charges. When Roe tries to reason with Dave about shutting down the shop, he tells her it’s none of her business. When the rules change, the first thing Roe does is insist Dave close down the coffee shop. She also gives him one of her dolls to care for, so he can learn how to become a more nurturing father.

Theresa Cameron appeals to Jay to curb his wife’s obsessive habits. Her doll collection alone tells Theresa that Roe is incredibly lonely, and her spending habits suggest she’s trying to fill some sort of emptiness inside herself. She also thinks his kids are lacking drive and work ethic. When the rules change, she makes the family work together on a coffee shop/hot dog cart business.

19-year-old Nick buts heads with Theresa and his father when they ask him to participate in helping around the house. Tempers in the Cameron house fly when Dave refuses to cater to Roe’s relaxed parenting style.

In the end, the families each learned how to bend and improve the quality of their family-life together. Oh, Wife Swap… how your drama soothes the soul.
