Good news, Star Wars fans, George Lucas announced today that we can look forward to an upcoming Star Wars Universe-based comedy series. Teaming up with Robot Chicken writers, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, Lucasfilm Animation will finally allow us to laugh at the occasional absurdity that is Star Wars.

While much of the original three films in the series is peppered with hokey, but memorable quips and scenes, the second three films often overdo that hokiness, pushing it beyond comedy to the point of absurdity. This is somewhat scary, as I imagine in my mind an entire series surrounding the bizarre life and stylings of Jar-Jar Binks.

On the other hand, I trust Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, and believe they will do the comedic aspect of the series justice.

In a statement about the upcoming project, Green said, “The ‘Star Wars’ universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined.” We all know, thanks to series like America’s Funniest Videos, that every day problems are a huge comedy hit, so this series definitely promises to tickle the funny bones of nerds like me all throughout the universe.

At this time there has been no network information or release date for the program, but you can bet your womp-rat blasting T-16 I’ll be watching the news with baited breath.

My real hope is that in George Lucas finally learning to laugh at himself, he can be coerced into releasing the Star Wars Holiday Special to DVD… Come on George, please?
