In one of the most anticipated returns of the season last night, V came back to ABC with a bang, reminding everyone why they started watching in the first place.

It had been four months since an episode had aired, yet all over Twitter and Facebook, people were chomping at the bit to get their fix of one of the best new shows on television, and they were not disappointed. With LOST coming to an end soon, ABC is now poised to have another a hit on their hands with V, as long as it can sustain a regular release schedule.

A remake of the classic 1980s series, what makes the modern V work so well, is that it taps in to the something society is so afraid of; the other guy. In an age when your next door neighbour could be a terrorist, V takes that fear and propels it to another level.

With the Visitors assuming the appearance of humans, we are left to ask the question, “Who can we trust?” Since September 11, 2001, that is a question that has been asked by everyone from politicians to the barber down the street. No one knows, and V understands this, and taps in to it, making for a not only a great science fiction show, but a cultural one that burrows in to your psyche and stays there well after 60 minutes have gone by.

Not only that, but with a mix of Visitors and humans forming a resistance to fight back against the takeover by the aliens, the show appeals to the everyman, who feels that they are powerless to do anything against the evil’s of our world. They can put themselves in the characters shoes for an hour, and imagine themselves fighting back in the war on terror.

The special effects and CGI may be a bit overdone here, but what makes up for it is the story and the characters. The acting by folks like Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Scott Wolf and Morena Baccarin is top notch, and the action never disappoints.

V is back with a vengeance folks, and the war is just beginning!
