The cable channel TLC has announced they are picking up Sarah Palin’s Alaska, a documentary series about the state and the former vice presidential candidate.
Peter Ligouri, Discovery’s chief operating officer, said the show will “reveal Alaska’s powerful beauty as it has never been filmed, and as told by one of the state’s proudest daughters.” Sarah Palin’s Alaska will be only eight episodes long and has not started filming yet. The title is subject to change.
Earlier this month it was reported that Sarah Palin and producer Mark Burnett (he’s responsible for Survivor and other reality programming) were shopping around trying to sell the series to any network interested. Discovery bumped the show to TLC (Discovery owns TLC)- the network responsible for giving the world Jon & Kate Plus 8 and other reality jewels about families of varying sizes.
TLC has needed to fill the gap after giving the divorcing Gosselins the boot and this show may do that for the network.
Discovery, who is acquiring rights for the show in the U.S. and overseas, does not want to call the show a reality TV show, rather preferring to call it “documentary series about the remarkable Governor Palin and her home state of Alaska.”
As for whether the show will feature Palin’s conservative politics, a TLC spokesman said, “TLC is about strong characters and compelling narratives, and there is absolutely no intention of making a political program whatsoever.”
Only time will tell how this goes, but this deal is sure to continue gathering attention. The main question is whether people will watch it.
