LeVar Burton let slip yesterday that Reading Rainbow may be coming back to television.
“You heard it here first… Reading Rainbow 2.0 is in th works! Stay tuned for more info. But, you don’t have to…” said Burton on his twitter account.
Reading Rainbow started in 1983 and ran on PBS until 2009. The series grabbed over 200 awards for its programming, including several Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Children’s Series.” The show, hosted by Burton for its entire run, focused on children’s literature, teaching children the fundamentals of reading and encouraging kids to read as a recreational activity. Each episode tended to focus on one book or a theme from a book that was explored in segments throughout the show.
Burton, along with being the host, was an executive producer on the project.
The show was produced by Lancit Media Entertainment until 2000 when On-Screen Entertainment took over. Burton stopped filming with the project in 2006, citing differences with the new owners, and as a result the show stopped production. The show was taken off the air in 2009 after the contract was up on PBS.
As of right now there are no further details on the development of Reading Rainbow 2.0, but you can be assured I will be glued to LeVar Burton’s twitter for any details I can scrounge up. Reading Rainbow was one of my favorite shows growing up and I can’t wait to see its triumphant return.
