Just as Jimmy Kimmel performed his entire show as “Jay Leno” (the wig was fabulous by the way), Jon Stewart’s edition of The Daily Show was done in the persona of Stewart’s Fox rival, Glenn Beck.
“I’m glad you tuned in to today’s show,” Stewart said during his opening. “It’s an important one. One that you and your family can’t afford to miss. Oh, you could miss it, but if you miss it… you’ll die.”
Stewart’s impersonation was spot on. He had the precariously placed glasses, the elaborate/spirited over-use of the blackboard, and (as the New York Times calls it) “just a little bit of histrionic showmanship.” He really went all out towards the end of the segment. He actually said (while channeling the conservative commentator), “If you subscribe to an idea, you also subscribe to that idea’s ideology and to every possible negative consequence that that ideology even remotely implies when you carry it to absurd extremes.”
In a clip behind Stewart, the actual Beck is seen talking about progressivism. ”Progressivism is the cancer in America and it is destroying our Constitution,” Beck groans, adding, “Progressives want to control every aspect of your life.” Stewart joined Beck stating,”I didn’t know that’s what I wanted, but I guess I want to control every aspect of your life. As a progressive I might say I think it’s a good idea for an agency to monitor pollution, but I guess what I really mean is it’s in the state’s interest that we be allowed to put a chip in your head that tells you when you can masturbate.”
“Total control,” Stewart says, echoing Beck. “In my America, nobody tells people when they can masturbate!”
I can only imagine being in the audience that night. It must have been epic.
