Google TV? No Thanks

By James Melzer on March 19th, 2010

I’ve been thinking a whole lot about the news that Google has teamed with Intel and Sony to bring us Google TV, a platform that will bring web based television into out homes through a new series of televisions and set-top boxes, and I don’t like it.

Basically, Google wants to be everywhere so it can run its ads and generate more money, while you surf social network sites like Twitter and Facebook through your TV, and perhaps even watch a few videos on YouTube and Hulu while you’re at it. My question is; what’s the point?

While everyone, their mother, and Steve Jobs, are doing everything they can to make the Internet more portable through hand held devices like Blackberry’s, iPhones and now iPads, Google almost seems to be taking a step backwards in the race, thinking that people want to actually stay home to surf the web and watch television. Yeah, right.

While the Google TV software will be open source, which means a whole whack of creative types can play around with it and make some pretty cool apps, again I say, why? I could care less about a TV trivia app, or being able to view my Picasa albums in my living room, and I could care even less about seeing tiny little Google pop up ads for Vicodin and Local Singles while watching the latest episode of American Idol.

Seriously, I think this is a big waste of time and money. Google should just stick with trying to make the Android a better phone and leave television alone. I mean, before you know it they’re going to be merging with Skynet and, well, you all know what happens then.
