I have been waiting months for Josh Gates and the Destination Truth crew to come back to Syfy with their unique brand of worldwide monster hunting. The second half of season three kicked off in Masada, Israel, a mountaintop stronghold where over 960 Jews chose suicide over surrender and enslavement in the revolt against Rome in the first century A.D.
The crew faced desert heat as they climbed the summit. As the first group to be granted permission to investigate the site at night, they set up their gear and began to monitor the environment. Reports from previous visitor claim visible apparitions, strange whistling sounds and moaning that the residents of Masada attribute to the restless spirits of suicide victims more than two thousand years dead.
Immediately after beginning the investigation, they capture the movement of an entity on the FLIR and begin chasing it down to try and explain it.
Upon exiting the oldest temple still standing, they hear the sound of drums and contact base camp for confirmation. During their journey back to base, they hear the thumping noise again and discover that the direction it was coming from was the Roman camp below. While on the bridge, they hear movement, see shadow moving below them and the trifield meter begins registering activity. They replenish their supplies, and head back out to visit the southern end of the site. Using the parabolic dish, they discover that much of the sound visitors may have heard was just reverberation of their own conversation and activity on the site.
Taking the evidence back to the States, they team up with Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters fame for help analyzing the evidence. The visual entity, they claimed, was proof enough of paranormal activity in Masada.
From there, it was on to Ireland, to discover the truth about everyone’s favorite pot-of-gold guarding little guy. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the team set out to find evidence of the leprechaun, which dates back thousands of years to early Celtic legend. An expert tells them they won’t find leprechauns in Dublin, so they travel 200 miles to the small village of Doolin. Seeking out a local fairy ring, they mapped out their base camp, and just before darkness fell, they set up their equipment and set out to find some leprechauns.
Fresh into the investigation, they see movement in the woods, but just as quickly as they catch it, it disappears. Josh and Ryder chase it down, but there’s no sign of the leprechaun. The FLIR picks up a red hot location. Digging into the hole putting off the light, they take a sample of the soil.
Josh and Ryder climb down the cliff side and come upon a cave. Within the narrow passage, they find themselves quickly hightailing it out of the cave when the water comes rushing down, filling the interior. After escaping he cavern, the duo finds mysterious skeletal remains.
Back in the States, they discover that the bones they found really belonged to a sheep. Josh shares photographs that he took of the skeletal remains from a pub owner who claimed they belonged to a leprechaun, but those turn out to be nothing more than a mish-mash of bones that possibly belonged to a chicken.
You never know what they’ll find, but I’m excited to see Josh Gates and the crew back in the field searching for the truth about all our favorite monsters and fairytale beings.
