Last night’s American Idol shocked just about everyone watching. As eliminations led to the final twelve contestants, I was literally on the edge of my seat when the last two ladies stood together waiting for the big reveal. I wasn’t worried. Lilly Scott has been blowing viewers away week after week with her unique style and fresh performances, while Katie Stevens struggled week after week to find herself and the perfect song choice to suit her age and ability.
Sure that Scott had it in the bag, no one was more surprised than me when Ryan Seacrest announced that Stevens would be going on. It couldn’t be, could it? I’ll be the first to admit that Scott’s performance on Tuesday night was less than stellar, as she attempted to put a new spin on Patsy Cline’s classic “I Fall to Pieces.”
Even the judges were somewhat flabbergasted after the announcement.
The camera panned across the judges’ table, revealing a stunned Kara DioGuardi and a saddened Ellen DeGeneres. How could it be that the sixteen-year-old girl who had no idea who she was as a singer was going on, and the woman who’s personal style was so well-defined her confidence shone through ever performance was going home? Unreal.
When asked how she felt about the shocking revelation, Lilly Scott told Seacrest, “I don’t know what America wants to hear.”
Also exiting stage right last night were Todrick Hall, a tearful Alex Lambert and bubbly Katelyn Epperly. As the judges pointed out, most specifically Ellen, this is not the end for them. It’s just the beginning, but watching your dream rush down the drain is never easy to endure.

Simon was straight on. You don't pick a sad, depressing song and expect to win.

Lilly is a great singer; her version of "I fall to pieces" was awful; I am totally surprised fans did not see beyond that performance. This shows how critical each and every performance is.

There are so many people on the radio who sound just like Katie. Lilly was refreshing and different. America got it wrong last night.

Unbelievable! Lily should have been in the final four at least. Do you think things might have been fixed to "balance" political correctness? A pox on Fox and American Idol!

My wife and I loved Lilly becuase she never strayed from who she was and if you just listen to her voice on her lsat song..she had an amazing voice. Just goes to show that this is not a singing competition but a popularity competition...Give the judges a say..because America got it wrong

WHAT!!! OMG!! Three out of the 4 eliminated last nite were huge mistakes (and I think everybody knows who I'm talking about)! This is exactly why I believe America should not decide who goes and who stays. Come on, be honest...how many of you out there are music experts? Oh well, we know that even though none of them will be the next Americn Idol, they will (at least those 3) make it big!

I agree that we're not music critics. But we are the ones who buy the music. Most people would rather buy music by someone more mainstream (Katie) and less quirky (Lilly). That's why America voted the way it did.

We had to beg Lilly to try out for Idol, its just not her thing. Im glad she did,I knew she would not win,but she got some great National exposer look for her at the Major music festivals in the next year,Coachcella,Boonaroo,Bammajam,MHMF. WHERE you find real artist!! not sweet pop canned music for tweens.
