March tends to be the month when big television networks pull the plug on series that aren’t cutting the mustard. ABC’s The Forgotten will be getting the axe after only six months on the air.

The Forgotten, which starred Christian Slater, kicked off with a major viewership back in September 2009, but as the series continued the numbers dropped, forcing ABC to cancel. The series was scheduled to continue until March 23, but the March 9 episode will be the last to air.

One issue many fans have with these quickly canceled series is that the networks don’t allow them enough time to gather a major following.

By the time enough fans invest in the show, they are already pulling it off the roster, leaving newer fans wondering what happened. Networks base their decisions around a show’s ratings, and while The Forgotten started off with a major following, the ratings quickly declined over the winter months, forcing ABC to cancel.

Is six months enough time to determine the future success of a series? With so much competition between networks to maintain audience attention, six months seems to be the normal allotment of time to determine a series’ future success. Unfortunately, this doesn’t allow a show enough time to gather a major fanbase, so fans wind up disappointed.

In the fast-paced world of television it’s easy come, easy go, and unfortunately The Forgotten has got to go.
