The CBS producer, Robert “Joe” Halderman ,who allegedly tried to extort $2 million from David Letterman will go to jail after pleading guilty to the charge. The issues first started when Halderman discovered that his girlfriend was also sleeping with The Late Show host. He contacted Letterman’s people to say that he would hold his tongue, but only for a hefty price.
According to prosecutors, Halderman told Letterman’s attorney in a secretly taped conversation, “The issue is your client does not want this information public. I have said, for a price, I will sign a confidentiality agreement and I will not make this information public. That’s, that’s the deal.” He went on to talk about keeping copies of the documents in case he got fired or his life somehow got threatened.
After Halderman’s arrest, David Letterman came out to his audience on October 1st, stating that he did indeed have affairs with women who worked for him. The audience took it surprisingly well as Letterman explained what Halderman was trying to do to him.
However, Halderman’s lawyer still contends that what Halderman was doing is legit. Gerald Shergal said, “He had intellectual property relating to Letterman’s poor conduct. He had the right to sell that intellectual property.”
Halderman faces up to 15 years in prison.
