A basketball game between Baylor and Texas Tech last night quickly went from a fun girls basketball game to a drama. Baylor freshman forward Brittney Griner has become infamous as the bad girl of college basketball.
During the second half of the game, Jordon Barncastle of Texas Tech swung Griner around and Griner drew back and punched Barncastle in the face with a right hook Layla Ali would have been proud of. The head coach for Baylor, Kim Mulkey, said “There’s no place for that in sports. I will deal with Brittney Griner, and it won’t be discussed in the media.”
Griner is the 6’8″ Baylor Lady Bears’ forward. The team was excited that with her help they are headed back to the Women’s NCAA Tournament. Griner has many special abilities that can be attributed to her size.
However, Griner’s violence puts a kink in Baylor’s plans. With one fell swoop Griner has become the talk of the Internet and may have tarnished her name forever. Griner has been suspended by the Big 12 Conference for her actions. Barncastle left the game for a short time, but she came back to take her technical foul shots. The Texas Tech coach said, “We are conserned that Barncastle may miss the rest of the season because of the punch.”
Good athletes are competitive that’s what makes them good. However, when your competitive nature turns to ager bad things can happen. We can only hope that Griner learns from her mistakes and this does not ruin her athletic career.
