Jay_Leno_300x300With all the hype surrounding Jay Leno’s triumphant return to The Tonight Show, its no surprise that Leno’s ratings beat out David Letterman’s Late Show (much to the chagrin of fellow Conan O’Brien fans).

It also may have something to do with who his guests were.  Riding high off Olympic gold, Shaun White was pleasant and witty, musical guest Adam (g)Lambert channeled fellow music star Lady Gaga with his intensely sequined eyes as he rocked out, but I think having Sarah Palin on your show will pull in a large amount of ratings anyway- many want to watch her succeed and many want to watch her fail.

Palin received enthusiastic applause from the audience (who seemed appreciative of everything she did) and showed off her “poor boy’s teleprompter” which is the writing on her hand.  She and Leno talked back and forth on the Tea Party movement, which Palin supports, calling it a “beautiful thing.”  When they talked about Palin’s new job on FOX, she said, “I studied journalism… I want to build some trust back in our media.”

Leno even let Palin do some stand-up at one point.  The jokes were corny and horrible, but I believe they were meant to be.

Whether the Leno train will continue speeding along its path or crash and burn is unknown at the moment, but I predict the ratings will continue to pour in at least for the first couple of weeks.  People will watch him because either he appeals to their generation, all the news surrounding the show, or just morbid curiosity while waiting for the show’s failure.  Johnny Carson, we miss you.
