In 1964, one of my favorite television visionaries was born in Chowchilla, California. Ronald Dowl Moore studied writing and drama in high school, but it was Government that he went on to major in at Cornell University on a naval scholarship. Moore lost interest in school, and failed out of Cornell in his senior year, but the education he received would heavily influence the structure of government he designed when re-imagining the 1970s science fiction series, Battlestar Galactica.
It would seem Moore was destined for great things from the start. Before his success with Battlestar Galactica, he managed to slip a script he wrote to Gene Rodenberry’s assistant while touring the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The script was optioned for the third season episode of TNG titled: The Bonding. Moore was signed on as a script editor, and eventually became one of the show’s producers. He co-produced over sixty episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and two episodes of Star Trek Voyager. His love for science fiction led him to co-produce the series Roswell, and he was executive producer for the HBO series Carnivale.
In 2003, Moore and his partner, David Eicke kicked off the introductory Battlestar Galactica mini-series, re-inventning the popular 1970s show. Battlestar Galactica only endured for four seasons on the Syfy channel, but its popularity was monumental for Moore and the Syfy channel. He and Eicke regularly podcasted throughout the course of the series, allowing fans and viewers and inside peek at the entire process. Battlestar Galactica led to the spin-off series, Caprica, in 2009. Set in the same universe, Caprica was a stand-alone series set to explain many of the concepts that evolved in Battlestar Galactica throughout the course of the series.
Since 2003, Moore has been nominated for a variety of awards for his work on Battlestar Galactica, winning an Emmy, a Peabody and a Streamy award. As he continues to contribute to the ongoing quest to make science fiction entertainment more mainstream, you can bet he will keep taking viewers places no man has ever gone before.
