Paul_Newman_300x300On August 30, 1993, David Letterman made his debut on CBS, after spending 11 years as the host of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. It was an exciting time for Letterman, and the network, which had paid a hefty sum to get him there, and it was well worth the trouble. For the next two years, The Late Show with David Letterman dominated Jay Leno’s Tonight Show in the ratings.

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments from Dave’s first broadcast on CBS, was a cameo by one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He was planted in the audience, and when the moment was right, he stood up and yelled the question, “Where the hell are the singing cats?”

So who was this big name actor?

Well, he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman on several occasions, and the two became close friends.

He was the recipient of many honors, including an Academy Award, three Golden Globes, and an Emmy. Although he retired from acting in 2007, he continued to do the things he loved which included philanthropy work and being an entrepreneur. He had his own line of food products that started in 1982, which included the policy that all proceeds (after taxes) would go to charity, and so far that amounts to more than 250 million dollars.

It was said that nobody could eat 50 eggs, but he did.

Have you guessed the celebrity yet? Of course! It was Paul Newman who appeared on CBS’s first broadcast of The Late Show with David Letterman and uttered the question, “Where the hell are the singing cats?”

Sadly, Newman passed away on September 26, 2008, but he will always be remembered for his classic film roles, his television appearances and yes, his salad dressing.

David Letterman? Well, he’s still being remembered for a whole host of things as he continues to appear on late night television to this day.
