trueblood-1Let me just start by saying thank you to Ann Rice for ruining the vampire image.  “Interview With The Vampire” changed the way everyone saw vampires, but not for the better.

Vampires are monsters, plain and simple.  They kill creatures for their blood and “live” forever if not destroyed.  I like to think of them as intelligent zombies.  Zombies kill and eat people, vampires do the same.  But I doubt anyone will ever pitch a show about a zombie in a rural town being all “sensitive” and falling in love with a girl, debating on whether or not he should eat her brains.  No, zombies are always evil and vampires are the too.

Now, what does this have to do with television?

With television shows on like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood, the tarnished image of vampires continues to perpetuate.  The vamps in these shows are in constant struggle with their nature and like the sensitive bad boy that all women apparently want, their brooding looks and sensitive eyes have all the girls swooning.  Honestly, would you want to date a vampire knowing that some day he could snap and kill you?  No thanks.

Even the shows Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel aid this image.  Yes, the vampires with no souls are evil through and through, but Angel is “different”, he has a soul.  Now I want you to think long and hard about this- a vampire with a soul.  The soul serves no purpose but to be a convenient plot device to make him even more brooding.  Thanks Joss Whedon!

We allow these shows to continue.  The vampire represents the evil inside us, but hey, if he can be good, so can we right?  Sure you can, but why put your faith in monsters?
