Friday_Night_LightsWhile NBC states that no official decision has been made, multiple sources confirm that Friday Night Lights’ fifth season will be its last hurrah according to Entertainment Weekly.

After the season wraps up in June, the cast will be free to pursue other jobs.  While I’m sure this news saddens some, you have a long time before it even makes an impact.  Friday Night Lights airs primarily on DirectTV so if you don’t have that particular network, this decision won’t effect you until 2011 most likely.  The show wraps up its fourth season on DirectTV tonight, but the season doesn’t begin to air until April 30th for the rest of us.  That means the fifth season is even further away, so enjoy the show while you can.

The main reason for this cancellation is the show, while entertaining, just can’t pull the numbers that it would need to stay alive.  The finale last year only had 4.36 million viewers and a rating of 1.3 in the 18-49 demographic which is super low (even for NBC).  Friday Night Lights viewers are few in number, but loyal.

This also frees up the actors we adore on the show to jump onto other pilots.  They already have started- Minka Kelly’s moved on to star in the pilot of True Love.  Just keep your fingers crossed and hope all of your favorite actors move on to something bigger and better.
