In Love Story, the fitting end to the fairy tale romance was “never having to say you’re sorry.” But despite what The Bachelor editing portrayed, that deep love was not there between Jake and Ali.
When Ali pulled an “Ed Swiderski” (from The Bachelorette) on Jake, telling him she needed to make a decision to leave the show or lose her job – was she angling for the same outcome that Ed received? If Bachelorette fans recall, Jillian Harris was crushed when Ed left to satisfy his Microsoft employment contract, and she ended up giving him her heart, when he took a risk and returned to the show. Tonight on the other hand, I didn’t feel the pain.
The interesting thing about Jake is that he always looks sincere, but his words were measured, and I think his emotion really stemmed from the rejection he felt when Ali chose her job and not him. I don’t think he ever intended to make her his wife and, if truth be known, Ali has a commitment issue or is afraid of rejection. In her defense, if I was afraid of making a fool of myself, by getting sent home at the 11th hour, Jake’s speech would have left me with very little comfort.
Let’s rewind for a look at Jake’s response to Ali’s dilemma, “I can say that we have something very special. Life is about minimizing your regrets. I think you are blessed and very lucky to have a job. I think I am very blessed and very lucky to have gotten to meet you. So selfishly, I would say stay here and take a chance on me. I can’t right now guarantee you that I am going to put a ring on your finger, but I can’t look you in the eye and tell you that I am not going to. Whatever you decide is ok.” Really? Come on now. If you love the girl, you fight for her or at the very least, throw her a crumb.
On a separate note, did anyone notice that Jake also told Ali that he didn’t plan to send her home tonight? That leads to the bigger question, which is, which “love of his life” was saved due to Ali’s fear of rejection, and does Ed, er…I mean Ali, try to come back?
