We all knew it was going to happen. MTV hasn’t really had music on their television network in a long time so it’s not a surprise that the company has dropped the words “Music Television” form its iconic logo.
“The people who watch it today, they don’t refer to MTV as music television. They don’t have the same emotional connection that, say, the people who are writing about [the logo change] do,” said Tina Exarhos, MTV’s head of marketing in an interview with the LA Times. Exarhos went on to say that they had been tossing around the idea for years, but didn’t take it to the next level of management for approval. Now just seemed like the right time. “It felt like, ‘Why have we been so scared when the channel itself has evolved so much over the years?’ ”
The Wrap calls it “a minor change with major symbolism.” I’d have to agree. MTV used to be about the music/ music videos. Video killed the radio star, remember? Now the network is more known for its reality programming (whether they’re scripted or not is another thing) like the ever controversial Jersey Shore, the heartwarming The Buried Life, and the saddening Teen Mom.
Is the music gone with the ‘Music Television’ moniker? No, it’s not, but one might argue that music hasn’t been on MTV in years.

I think I join many when I say, it's about time. Feels an awful lot like the days before TNN changed to Spike, so how long before a total name change?
