Just before the big game, which ended with a Saints’ victory in case you missed it, Katie Couric sat down and talked to Drew Brees and his wife, Brittany. Couric has always been a down-to-earth journalist, and the atmosphere of this interview is both professional and somewhat casual.

Couric has a lot of respect for Brees, which she noted, when asked about the interview, which aired in three parts on CBS, the final installment playing just before the Super Bowl last night. “In a year we’ve been disappointed in the behavior of athletes, he stands out — his character, integrity, what he’s doing for the city of New Orleans.”

Since Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has struggled to get back on its feet. While many of its star residents moved out of the city after tragedy struck, Brees told Couric that being a part of the city shaped him and gave him a great sense of pride. Over the course of the last five-years, Brees and his wife have gotten involved in the rebuilding of the community, helping rebuild parks and schools in hopes of restoring New Orleans to its former beauty and glory.

Many Hurricane Katrina refugees have not been back to the city since they were forced to evacuate their homes during the hurricane, and now that the Saints won the Super Bowl, these residents have hope that they will be able to return as their city continues to restore that which was lost.
