The folks over at USA Today created an ad meter that tracked second-by-second responses of a panel of viewers to ads that aired during the Super Bowl.  The Ad Meter ranks the ads from best to worst and you can click on any ad listed to see what viewers’ responses were.

Topping the list as the best ad of the night was a Snickers commercial featuring Betty White and Abe Vigoda, seen above (yes, he’s definitely still alive).  The ad features Betty White playing football with a bunch of muddy, sweaty guys who say she’s playing like Betty White (is that a bad thing?).  A cute girl gives Betty a Snickers bar and Betty is suddenly transformed into another sweaty, muddy guy.  The whole idea is that you’re not yourself unless you eat a Snickers.  The ad is very funny and Betty White is fantastic as usual.  It’s a good win for Snickers after being poked at three years ago for airing what was perceived as an anti-gay commercial during the big game.  Carole Walker, head of integrated marketing communication at Mars said, “It’s three years later, we’ve done our homework. We’ve done our research. We were absolutely not nervous about the campaign in any way.”

Snickers beat out Doritos who won last year.  The Doritos ad showed a dog who had a nasty owner get revenge by putting a shock collar on him.  Anheuser-Busch finished with two ads in the top five (they bought four minutes of ad time), but they didn’t have enough power to overcome the Mars Candy.  Coca-Cola took the fifth spot with an African sleep-walker finally getting a Coke amongst several confused wild animals.

The controversial Tim Tebow/ Focus On The Family ad turned out to be a dud among viewers.  Of course this didn’t upset the people over at Focus On The Family.  “We’re not selling products. Our goal is to get the message out there, and we thought it was a great message,” said president of Focus On The Family Jim Daly.  However, the ad didn’t do nearly as badly as the GoDaddy.com ads, featuring Danica Patrick.  Whoever thought a race car driver was a good face for an internet company should be forced to watch the ads over and over again.

What are your thoughts on the Super Bowl Ads?
