It seems whenever you browse the net, or turn on the E! network these days, you’re apt to find Mel Gibson getting himself into another sticky situation. This time, he’s cussing out reporters. I’m not sure if he thought they had cut the feed, or he meant for WGN reporter, Dean Richards, to hear exactly what he thought of him, but the world knows now.
He was in a good mood during the first half of the interview, as you can see. Richards made the mistake of asking Gibson if he felt the public might perceive him differently because of his violent outbursts, antisemitic commentary and obvious struggles with alcoholism, which came crashing into the public forum back in 2006. Confused by the question, Gibson asked Richards to clarify, and when he did, Gibson’s mood abruptly shifted.
Gibson noted that he had moved on from those past incidents, but clearly, Richards had not.
After asking Richards to wrap it up, Richards made a quick mention of Gibson’s recently released film, “Edge of Darkness,” and after saying goodbye, Gibson rolled his eyes at the camera and called Richards an A**hole.
Gibson later waved it off, saying he was talking to someone off-camera in the room with him. Sure ya were, Mel. Sure ya were.
First James Cameron, and now Mel Gibson. Of course this leads me back to my earlier line of questioning regarding celebrities and privacy. How much of their personal lives must they sacrifice to be in the position they are in? The past is the past, yes indeed, but when you put yourself in front of the media and the spotlight, you’re going to face unsavory questions. Is it any of our business whether or not Mel Gibson sought counseling and quit drinking? As long as people are paying $12 a pop to go see his movies, they’re going to want the inside scoop.
Richards noted after the fact that he didn’t want an apology from Gibson, but he’s relatively certain people are going to watch the interview and see for themselves exactly the kind of guy Mel Gibson really is.
