The name Aaron Spelling was practically synonymous with quality television during the 1960 through the 1990s. With a host of popular nighttime dramas from Fantasy Island and Starsky and Hutch, to T.J. Hooker and Dynasty, Spelling’s The Love Boat entertained families and lovers alike, by whisking them away for fun and romance on the cruise liner, the Pacific Princess.
For nine seasons and four television movie specials, The Pacific Princess, steered by Captain Merrill Steubing, featured a comedic cast of regulars, including the cruise planner, bartender, ship’s doctor and a yeoman purser. Each week, the captain and crew made it their duty to ensure that every single passenger on the cruise was satisfied with their journey and experience, which you can imagine led to some pretty wacky comedy.
One of the fun things about The Love Boat was it’s famous string of weekly guests.
It wasn’t unheard of board The Love Boat to find famous faces like Ed Begley Jr., Scott Baio, Phyllis Diller, Erik Estrada, Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor, Melissa Gilbert, Corey Feldman and even Tom Hanks to name a few. The famous faces were one of the things people tuned in to catch each week, but the humor and chaos aboard the ship were equally intriguing thanks to the multiple story arcs in every episode.
Even after the show’s cancellation in 1986, it still continued to remain popular, gathering thousands of new fans in rerun land. Though The Love Boat is not currently in the rerun circuit, you can guarantee it will pop up again eventually. You may be able to find at least two of the nine seasons on DVD. Currently they come in two-part installments.
