Frances Reid was a soap opera legend. She portrayed Alice Horton for over four decades on NBC’s Days of Our Lives. Reid passed away at the age of 95 on Wednesday, February 3rd.
Reid’s career began with a small part in the 1938 film Man-Proof, and then the actress went on to snag several jobs on Broadway. After spending 12 years on the soap opera Portia Faces Life, Reid went on to star in As the World Turns for several years. After a short appearance in The Edge of Night, the actress accepted the role as matriarch Alice on the acclaimed Days of Our Lives. This is the role that made Reid’s acting career notable, as Alice became a common household name after the soap opera’s series premiered in 1965.
Reid’s portrayal of Alice won her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 at the Daytime Emmys.
She left Days of Our Lives in December 2007, to be missed but not forgotten.
While Reid’s death is sad, I can’t help but think that we can’t be too upset about her demise. After all, this talented woman led a long, fulfilling life, and has left marks on many people throughout the nation who won’t soon forget her. Here’s to you, Frances, wherever you are!
