Smallville returned for its mid-season premiere on Friday, January 29th. Was it exciting? Not really. It actually felt more like a wind up to the two hour special next week- hardly the premiere we were hoping for.
Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling) leave a charity event together, cementing that they are officially together (like we didn’t know that was gonna happen eventually). Oliver’s old instructor, Vordigan (or the Dark Archer), comes back into his life and tries to make an old oath come to life. The oath Oliver took was, “No lovers, allies, or disciples” which kind of makes no sense since Oliver would be a disciple himself, but hey, it’s television and we’ll run with it. In order to push that oath, Vordigan takes swipes at Lois and Chloe and ends up kidnapping Mia (guest star Elise Gatien).
In an extremely corny (even though it’s supposed to be heartfelt) way, Vordigan tries to get Oliver to kill him because he’s feels he’s too old and unable to fulfill his duties. Oliver’s dealing with his own demons (namely Lois and Clark being together and his own dark side) so he has issues completely facing his old master. Clark rushes in to save the day, but only after shutting down Zod (Callum Blue) who pushes Clark to his limits.
The “Absolute Justice” event should have been the premiere. The original date for the premiere was last week, but George Clooney’s Hope For Haiti took precedence. After the wait then the delays, you’d think we would have had something explosive that just drags you in, but it wasn’t. I was disappointed and I’m sure several fans were too. Re-think your strategy next time CW.
