Psych: Is Juliet’s Brother A Murderer?

By Sara Welsh on January 28th, 2010

Gus-Psych-1Psych came back into my life (finally) for it’s mid-season premiere with guest star John Cena of the WWE as Juliet’s Army hero brother.

When there’s a suspicious hanging suicide on an Army base, Lassiter and Juliet go to investigate with Shawn, Guss, and Abigail.  Shawn (of course) spots what could be foul play and insists it’s murder.  Juliet calls her brother Ewan (John Cena), who’s a former war hero and does covert operations for the government now, to help them with jurisdiction problems.  He just happens to be in the area and agrees to come help with the case.

Ewan gets them on base with ease but Major General Felts tells the group it’s a military issue.  They insist on seeing the deceased’s (a Mr. Starks) records and belongings.  Ewan gets a call from his superior and is told to find the “bad seed” on base and cover it up.  Even though Shawn finds clues to what happened to Starks, Ewan does his best to get Shawn off the case.  Shawn doesn’t back down easily, so he and Gus sneak back onto base.  They get caught, but a Private Templeton says to meet him so he can give them information on the case.  Templeton never shows and is found drowned in a pool by Felts and Private Wallach.

Shawn and Gus think it may be Ewan who’s killing and Juliet goes ballistic at the suggestion.  He suggests that Juliet should talk Ewan into helping them around the base so he can see which side Ewan’s really on.  They discover that Starks used to cover for Templeton at the weapons depot.

Gus and Shawn stake out the weapons depot that night and sneak onto a truck as it’s leaving.  They discover Wallach is selling weapons on the sly, which is what Starks and Templeton must have found out.  Ewan shows and tells them he’ll take care of it, but Shawn turns back and sees Ewan ready to kill Wallach.  Ewan gets arrested but ends up magically no longer in custody.  Shawn and Gus go to the airport to see Abigail off as she’s moving to Africa to teach and leaving her relationship with Shawn open ended.

I was so excited to see one of my favorite shows back but so disappointed by this episode.  John Cena tried hard to be a great actor, but he’s so stiff it was hard to feel the character.  There wasn’t nearly enough Shawn/Gus moments that really make the show and the episode didn’t have a definitive ending.  It kinda felt like the writers phoned in this one.  I hope next week is back to the same old Pysch I’ve come to adore.

I hope it will be too, I don't think it was the best Psych episode. I wonder if they are going to bring back John Cena.
