Instead of Jake Pavelka as a sweet but boring bachelor on the ABC reality show, he has become a man on a mission, with surprising strength and determination to find a wife. One by one, he managed to eliminate ladies all night long, until four were out the door. I admire his decision not to lead anyone on, but throughout the entire episode, I kept wondering if the producers were ringing their hands and desperately trying to conjure up a back-up plan, for the time when no one would remain for the hometown visits.
The first surprising kiss-off happened on the dreaded two-on-one date. This particular date always strikes terror in the minds of the bachelorettes because one woman, either Ella or Kathryn, was knowingly destined to be sent home. Tonight the signs were there for Ella to be the victim, especially when Jake began their private conversation with “there is a reason why I wanted you to come tonight. With you, if I’m not absolutely sure, I don’t want to keep you from Ethan.” Typically, after hugging the rose-less lady goodbye, the bachelor returns to present the rose to the lady-in-waiting, but not tonight. Jake walked inside after Ella was whisked away by car, and in a surprising twist, proceeded to tell Katherine that he knew she would find the right man some day, but it wasn’t him. Poof, she was gone, as well. When the remaining bachelorettes realized what had taken place, they became fearful, and with good reason. In just a short while, two more would follow down the same road.
Jake was so uncomfortable during the rose ceremony, that you could almost see him sweating blood. After presenting roses to Ali and Corrie, he excused himself from the ceremony and went to find Chris Harrison, who by the way, was surprisingly not even nearby pretending to be mildly interested in what was happening. Jake asked Harrison if he was required to hand out two roses that evening and was given the go ahead to send two ladies home. The final rose went to Vienna, the hated bachelorette, and the ladies were not only stunned, but also venomous regarding Jake’s decision to keep her.
Ali, Corrie, Vienna, Tenley and Gia remain, battle scarred but victorious, to see another California day.
