Jennifer_Lyon_300x300USA Today has announced today that Jennifer Lyon, who placed fourth in Survivor: Palau, has passed away.

Lyon was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer at age 33 in 2005 (she was diagnosed a few months after appearing on Survivor).  She elected to have a double mastectomy followed by chemotherapy, which gave her four more years of life.  “I was completely shocked and overwhelmed,” Lyon said to Us Weekly at the time. “I felt fine that day; in fact, I’ve been healthy my entire life.”  Lyon dated Austin Carty, an ex Survivor: Panama star. When speaking to US Weekly on Wednesday, he recalled her fondly saying, “Jen was a genuinely selfless, sweet-natured person.

She always had a smile. She cared about every person.”  Lyon passed away at her home in Oregon.

Survivor: Palau was the show’s tenth season, where Tom Westman took the top spot.  Lyon was Westman’s ally going into the final four and when the vote to leave was split between Ian and Jenn, there was a fire building challenge to determine who could stay.  Ian won and Lyon took fourth place.

Lyon’s website is mostly dedicated the many charities and organizations she was involved with, but she was a strong advocate for breast cancer research and awareness for her remaining years.  Rest in peace Jenn, you will be missed.
